Environmental 3Rs Get Theme Park in Hanoi

Environment Theme Park teaches Reduce, Re-use, Recycle in Hanoi

Hanoi, Vietnam: Saturday, 11 July 2009 – Hanoi will launch a park themed on Reducing, Re-using and Recycling (the 3Rs) garbage next Wednesday (15 July 2009).

Set up by the Hanoi Urban Environment Company in cooperation with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), this will be Vietnam’s first ever 3R Park, says Tran Thi Lan Anh, who will oversee the park’s operations.

Free Admission

Visitors to the park, located at the Cau Dien Waste Treatment Plant in Tu Liem District, will learn about the 3Rs and how to separate waste generated by households through graphic illustrations and models; and take part in outdoor activities and games related to the theme. Admission to the park will be free.

The park, which is part of the US$4 million 3R Hanoi (3R-HN) project that began implementation in late 2006, will have all its components completed next month.

Environmental Education Center

Le Minh Ngoc, a member of 3RHN, said in the near future the park will become an environmental education center helping people learn about waste separation practically and properly, and get updated information on environmental protection.

A conference on the plan to spread the system of waste separation throughout Hanoi by next month is expected to be held at the opening ceremony.

Since it was launched about two years ago, 3R-HN’s waste separation initiative has been carried out at some locations in the capital – the wards of Phan Chu Trinh, Nguyen Du, Thanh Cong and Lang Ha.

It is estimated that domestic waste accounts for nearly 59 percent of garbage accumulated in Hanoi, while construction wastes make up around 21 percent, according to Hanoi Urban Environment Company.
